I have the honour to inform you that I have had
under consideration the question of providing accommodation for
the additional engines and coaches rendered necessary by the
increase of traffic on the railway, and for anticipating the
need for further extension of that accommodation in the future.
2.
As the supervision of coaches when not in use is
the duty of the Locomotive Superintendent, I have come to the
conclusion that it is best to concentrate the accommodation for
housing and cleaning coaches close to the workshops, where the
existing accommodation for coaches is situated.
3.
There are at present only sufficient sheds for
housing six engines and eight coaches. The existing accommoda-
tion for the latter is inadequate and it is necessary to have
accommodation for four trains of seven coaches each and for
eight more engines four of which are already on order.
4.
To give effect to these proposals and to provide
room for future extensions, I recommend that the private pro-
perty comprised in Inland Lots 198, 201, 248, 249, 224 and 223
be acquired in exchange for the Crown land edged in blue and in
green on Enclosure 1 hereto; and that the area thus acquired be
utilised for the laying out of a yard in accordance with Enclos-
ure 2.

This laying out will involve the removal of a
store which will be placed elsewhere, and the conversion of the
